Outlander S2 Epi7 – Faith (Title Analysis)

Directed by Metin Hüseyin      Written by Toni Graphia

Starz/TV Synopsis

Doctors at L’Hopital Des Anges try to save Claire’s life and that of her unborn child; and King Louis accuses two men of practicing the dark arts.

 What is faith?

Faith is confidence or trust in a person or thing; or the observance of an obligation from loyalty; or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement; or a belief not based on proof; or it may refer to a particular system of religious belief, such as in which faith is confidence based on some degree of warrant.

For starters, this whole season has focused on the Bonnie Prince, who has a particular system of religious beliefs that the rightful, Catholic King (his father) be on the throne; while, Claire and Jamie are trying to thwart his plans to succeed with the rebellion and go to war.

It also isn’t lost on me that most of this episode takes place in a charity hospital run my nuns and that Claire’s pain and broken heart will be soothed by Mother Hildegarde’s caring spirit. So glad she’s there for her and will take care for her during this difficult times.

As for the King, we were told in the last episode that he was rounding up people who practiced the dark arts; so, this episode, he will probably go through with more than an accusation. Master Raymond received a warning from Claire, but will he heed the warning or stick around and get caught? If it is the latter, he will not be the only one. I can’t wait to see non-book readers’ reaction as to whom the other man is. This part of faith is the aspect of having a belief, not based on proof. The King can accuse someone of the dark arts, but can he prove it? It will be interesting to see this exchange and how they adapted this part of the book. I am sure the set designs will be off the chain!

This will also be an excruciatingly difficult episode to watch. With Claire and Jamie’s performances reaching new heights, I am sure they will be above their A-game in this episode, particularly Cait. Lord, I felt ever pain she had in the last episode.

Picture6

Jamie had all the confidence in the world in Claire by venturing on this journey to Paris that now could be totally jeopardized. His life hangs in the balance after being arrested for dueling – outlawed in Paris – and could face the death penalty; yes, possibly hanging.

Ironic, isn’t it, especially after Wentworth Prison?

And, what exactly made Jamie betray Claire?  Guess we will find out in this episode either by Fergus telling Claire, in a flashback, or both.

3-1

Claire and Jamie always trust each other and have vowed to tell each other the truth, be honest. They are stronger together and hate being apart. Jamie pledged fealty to Claire in S1 and his fidelity to her with La Dame Blanche.

Picture8

However, they made promises to each other that Jamie has broken and will have to contend with the consequences and repercussions on more than one front. At the end of last week’s episode, Claire was losing the baby; that was too much blood for her not. Faith here is a double entendre.

Picture7

Will their faith in each other continue, be strengthened by these latest events, or will it tear them apart?

Picture9

This might be one of the hardest episodes of the season to watch. But watch, we must. I am already emotional about it, even before it airs.
