Freedom Riders is the powerful story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives, many enduring savage beatings and imprisonment, for simply traveling together on buses as they journeyed through the Deep South.
Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws in order to test and challenge a segregated interstate travel system, the Freedom Riders persevered in their cause, despite bitter racism and mob violence.
Freedom Riders is airing October 10 at 8/9c on WORLD Channel (check local listings).
It is also available to stream in full PBS American Experience and the PBS video app.
