Outlander S8 Epi9 – Pharos

Written by Diana Gabaldon | Directed by Emer Conroy

This conversation is between Blacklanderz® Jess L. (JL), Margot, and Jess H. (JH). Arranged and edited by Vida.

M: So John was betrayed by his side man, huh…

JL: I actually feel bad for John here. I have grown to like his character after last season.

JH: I knew that man was suspicious, but I didn’t think he would stoop to this!

M: This is crazy. I didn’t anticipate someone using this against John. I hate this for him.

JL: I was stunned by this, but it was also a reminder of the time period.

JH: This is terrible! John doesn’t deserve this!

JL: Were we introduced to this man previously, and I forgot LOL???

JH: Oh no, how is John gonna get out of this??

M: FAKE MAN! He’s FAKE! Always gave me the creeps. What did John see in him?

JL: John should’ve done a better job of picking his men, because this man is a snake!

JH: John, you can do way better than this POS!

M: John basically saying he does not negotiate with terrorists, yaassss.

JL: HA-HA, yes, I love this attitude by him. LOL.

JH: LJG always maintains his dignity, no matter the circumstances!

M: I don’t know about ya’ll, but this seems kind of random. Why??

JL: This whole storyline is not making sense to me. How is this significant?

JH: Is that really the only way? This Richardson guy is crazy.

M: I don’t like this blackmail side quest.

JL: I do not find this small little storyline helpful or necessary.

JH: What were blackmail laws like back in the 18th century? Would any of this hold up in court?

M: Looks like my guy John Grey has an idea.

JL: At least John is smart and has a plan because who knows what this man is going to do to him.

JH: LJG always has a backup plan!

M: Did he love him? I fail to see the motivation of his actions. This man is unhinged.

JL: He would have never done this to him if he really loved him.

JH: I doubt he loves him. Like he said before, he’s just not brave.

M: Something is up with the ring. For a moment there, I thought it was a gift Jamie gave him.

JL: Let’s hope this man actually does something helpful to John after all this.

JH: I’m surprised LJG is giving up this ring to this jerk. Isn’t it one of his most prized possessions?

M: A lighthouse? Are we going back into the future? Did they have lighthouses back then?

[V: Yes, the first lighthouse here was built in the early 1700s.]

JL: A lighthouse is so random. Is this an indication of future talk again?

JH: Will this be a seafaring episode? Or will the lighthouse guide us to some answered questions?

[Claire] I once believed
time could be reshaped
by sheer force of will,
like water wearing away at stone.

But with Jamie’s fate
seemingly carved into
history’s bedrock,
I found myself searching
for any crack,

any fissure through
which hope might seep.

M: He’s been gone for seven weeks? Wow, they really kept him hostage.

JL: I always forget how long it takes to travel during this time.

JH: Has he been imprisoned all that time? Poor LJG!

M: So, Percy actually did keep his promise.

JH: Ha-ha, ‘melancholy man’ is a good description for Percy.

JL: That is a good name for him; at least he did something right.

Also, I cannot get over this being the second-to-last episode of the show ever, and we are spending time on this little plot.

“Your Grace, I am informed that
after your time here,

JL: Glad that LJG told William the truth about himself previously.

you are to return to England,
where you will address the House of Lords
in regards to the American War.
I’ve taken the liberty of appending
a direction that this address might take
in terms of support of the war.

Should you choose not to heed the suggestion,
be apprised that copies of the accompanying documents

M: This is a foul twist in the story. I really didn’t anticipate someone using his this against him. I don’t like it.

JH: This is awful! If this gets out, will LJG ever be allowed back in society, even if he denies it?

will be forwarded to all London newspapers,
as well as to each member of Parliament.
This is about my-
my father’s…proclivities.

JL: Who is Wainwright? I’m losing interest in this storyline. LOL

M: Okay, that explains the seven weeks. I was wondering why they held him so long and kept him alive.

JH: Ugh, that’s so long, and has he been in that gross shed the whole time?

M: At least they aren’t wasting time with this storyline. I mean, they can’t, there’s only one episode left.

JH: I doubt many men could win a fight against this father/son duo. LOL.

JL: At least William is good for something.

M: What is the deal with Richardson? Honestly, I’m kind of glad they brought him back cuz he seemed like a random addition last season.

JL: Thank you for reminding me about Richardson being in that last season.

JH: Yeah, hopefully we’ll learn more about this mysterious Richardson!

JL: Quick thinking by John, because who knows if they would’ve figured it out without that clue.

There’s something scratched on the inside.

Pharos.

M: Ah, the use of the nail. Smart.

JH: LJG is brilliant as always!

It’s Greek
[William] Lighthouse.

M: Well, I learned something new today.

JH: And he knows Jaime knows his Greek!

JL: Now the lighthouse makes sense!

M: But why? Why is Richardson like this?

JH: What is this guy’s problem? Why is this so important to him?

JL: Nothing is making sense to me at this point. Is all of this to stop a speech from happening?

M: So I know we are off books, and I’m scared they will kill LJG.

JH: Yes, we are in uncharted territory, especially after Fergus, no one is safe!

JL: I hope, if something happens to LJG, they take Richardson out.

JL: I love seeing Claire go along for the rescue mission, even though we haven’t seen her as much as I would’ve liked this season.

M: Time for a new adventure! Let’s go save LJG!

JH: These two have a lot of experience saving people. LJG couldn’t be in better hands!

M: Spotted! Richardson fishing!

JH: I would hate to be hunted by Claire Fraser.

JL: Claire stays ready so she doesn’t have to get ready.

JL: Casually fishing while you have someone tied up in the boathouse is crazy.

M: That’s kind of crazy, to be honest. He’s scheming to mess up the American Revolution.

JH: Really? Fishing at a time like this?

M: And he’s casually fishing like it’s a random Tuesday.

JH: Maybe he uses fishing to clear his head for these plots he comes up with. LOL.

JL: I love how fearless Claire is.

I wrote the script pretty much according to their outline, and included some specific things that I thought would work. Shaping the script is pretty much in my hands entirely. The total content, only up to a point.

Sometimes I invent something. The idea of Jamie and William diving in and swimming up into the boat shed was mine. It’s just the sort of thing they would do.

~ Diana Gabaldon

JL: They all have been sitting in that boathouse for weeks. I know it smells crazy in there.

M: They have no idea what is coming.

JH: Free our man LJG!

M: That was an amazing entrance! I do like Jamie and William working together.

JH: Son and biological father working together to free the adoptive father. That’s legendary teamwork.

JL: That was an amazing camera shot.

JL: William, I am slowly starting to give you some credit, maybe you are not so bad….

M: That was so cold. Have to give it props.

JH: William learned from the best!

JL: Claire, go get him girl!

M: Again, just like any random Tuesday.

JH: I guess the fish aren’t biting!

JL: Man, he really has been a hostage for weeks! That’s crazy.

M: They are saving my guy!

JH: Help is here, LJG!

JL: I am glad they were able to rescue him. Now, let’s get back to the other storylines and wrap this up.

M: I really like their father/son relationship.

JH: This was a great reunion! I hope this heals their relationship, especially after William came so close to losing him.

JL: Claire and her husbands. LOL I love that storyline of Claire marrying Lord John 10/10.

M: Oh, yea I almost forgot. Claire has seriously had three husbands. That storyline was wild.

JH: Claire collects husbands like infinity stones.

M: Did he really think no one was going to come in for backup?

JH: Richardson had no idea who he was missing with!

JL: He is lucky to be alive.

M:  There’s no way it’s this straightforward.

JH: Yeah, if there’s one thing these showrunners know how to do, it’s a gut punch!

JL: I cannot handle any more deaths.

M: I guess it is?

JH: Watch out, Claire has killed before, especially to protect those she loves!

JL: I love Claire!

JL: Playing both sides is insane, but also, what was the reason for all of this?

M: I don’t understand his motivation. Why would you be a spy and THEN want to betray the revolution?

JH: This man was really playing both sides. He must have known it wouldn’t end well for him.

M: So they are leaving Claire alone with him?

JH: Is splitting up right now the best plan?

JL: Yea, nothing good ever happens when they split up.

M: My thoughts exactly…

JH: WHAT is this guy’s deal? Does he just live for drama?

JL: Unleashing what?

JL: That is such an interesting question to ask.

M: Woah… kind of took a turn. Of course, she abhors slavery.

JH: Is this related somehow?

M: Wait… how far back are we going? How does he know this?

JH: So, he’s an abolitionist?

JL: This is interesting because that man does not look like someone who has enslaved relatives in his lineage.

[V: Being that he said his great-great-grandmother was a slave, it’s possible. I have some cousins who look more like him than they do my other cousins, siblings, and me. Again, I don’t know how this time travel works. But, if he were successful in stopping slavery from ever happening, would he even exist?]

M: Oh, that’s great!

JH: Ok, I’m starting to see his motivations.

JL: I am still struggling to understand why he wants to stop the duke from giving the speech?

JL: This is starting to sound like future talk.

M: Wait this information is too specific.

JH: How does he know that???

JL: Well, I did not see that coming, not another time traveler. Why do they all cross paths with Claire?

M: Time travelers are popping up everywhere now like daisies, huh?

JH: They’re both time travelers!

JL: Jamie is a man of action, always looking good.

M: He’s the only one here she can talk to about this!

JH: Hope he helps them get away before something else happens!

M: In an ideal world, which would be amazing, but we all know there really is no changing history.

JH: Yeah, we know from this show that one time traveler can’t change history.

JL: You are correct, we do know that they have tried many times before and failed.

M: Does it? His thought process makes sense, but I feel like it would be way more complicated than that, even if America had remained a colony.

JH: I doubt the king would actually do it. Wasn’t it just to persuade enslaved people to fight on their side?

JL: He knows all this stuff about the past and what is to come, but he expects the crazy king to do something right? LOL.

M: Exactly! It’s not that simple. I appreciate his efforts though!

It was interesting to have this philosophical debate with somebody else who is also a time traveler about, ‘What is your responsibility?’ Or, ‘What are your abilities as a time traveler to affect change or to influence change?’

~ Caitríona Balfe

JH: Yeah, Claire has some experience with trying to change history. Richardson should listen!

JL: This plan is not a good one at all. It makes no sense.

JL: Yes, Claire, give him some time traveling advice.

M: Let him know! From one traveler to another.

JH: Yes, in this universe, timelines can’t just be changed like that.

M: I believe it too. She’s a part of history. She was meant to be there.

JH: Yes! Her past actions made the future possible!

JL: Yes, I agree she is a part of history.

JL: Just because you want to change history doesn’t mean you are absolved from your crimes, sir.

JH: Yes do your part, but don’t think one person can significantly change events!

M: It seriously won’t be that simple. Even if he was successful in his attempt to prevent slavery, there would be a way for it to turn out the way it did.

JL: Claire, why would you do that?

M: This is a dumb move… and kind of naive.

JH: Well, this guy’s intentions were good, although his methods were bad.

JL: OMG, I did not see that coming.

M: Who got shot?

JH: Oh, jeez, who is dead now?!!

JL: Well, that escalated quickly.

M: WELP. To be honest,  I’m not surprised. The series has one more episode left. There was nowhere else for this storyline to go.

JH: Whelp is right, guess his time traveling days are over.

JL: I wonder if this is foreshadowing for what’s to come in the next episode.

M: I think it is foreshadowing. We shall see in a week!

JH: Yes from what we’ve seen so far, time traveling can’t change history. It’s all already set in stone.

JL: Well, this is awkward.

JH: These three have been through so much together, including bigamy. LOL.

M: Most awkward trio in the whole story. I appreciate how the actors always make it slightly uncomfortable for the viewer when we see all of them together.

JL: This whole beef between them because of Claire was a funny storyline. LOL

M: Jamie is being arrogant. He did wrong things, too.

JH: Yes, these two have been through worse. I’m glad they’re not letting this affect their relationship.

JL: He sort of has, but I love jealous Jamie. He does not play about his wife.

M: He really doesn’t play about her. The man can’t see reason in this situation.

JH: Jamie has been pig headed his entire life!

JL: Claire’s trying to make sure her husbands reconcile, how sweet. LOL

M: She is just so over them beefing.

JH: Yes, it’s time you admit it, Jamie!

JL: Jamie is definitely stubborn, and so are his children, a trait he has passed on to them.

JH: Well, maybe it’s time for the Frasers to learn some modern conflict-resolution skills!

M: Wait, he said a line about how his grandfather died. Was this mentioned earlier in the story? I must have missed that.

JH: I understand his anger, but can’t Jamie also feel a little flattered at this?

He can’t really operate within his own simple truth. He has to hide behind masks due to the given circumstances of his time, and because he can’t be his true self, we’re never quite sure what he’s thinking. Lord John can’t express how he feels about Jamie, or how he feels as a gay man in the 1700s, which adds a lot of dimension and joy in playing the character.

David Berry

JL: LOL, I can see how that makes Jamie uncomfortable.

M: I’m ready for this conversation to be over. It’s so awkward.

JH: It’s true. Jamie entrusted his only son to LJG. And Willie is finally starting to have some character growth!

JL: It took him long enough to finally grow up.

M: Willie really isn’t a bad guy. He’s annoying sometimes, but he turned out pretty well thanks to LJG.

JL: LJG was a good father to William, especially considering his crazy parentage.

M: I think in romantic love, LJG is unlucky. But his great love is the love he has for Willie.

JH: He truly is William’s father.

M: Exactly! He deserves so much better.

JH: It’s true, and not just for LJG! This world is too cruel to these characters.

JL: Lord John needs to be more careful with whom he has liaisons with.

M: Jamie really thought LJG was going to beat him? What kind of person does he think LJG is?

JH: LJG is not the type of man to go without honor.

JL: No he is not, always talking about honor and being a gentleman. LOL.

JL: Oh, course that is how these two settle a debate!

M: I missed seeing this!

JH: Aww, just like old times!

He chooses to use his heart and his kindness to solve conflict. I’m drawn to characters that show their strength through vulnerability and compassion. And I think that has nothing to do with sexuality at all.

David Berry

JH: I know it’s been terrible to find out he was lied too, but William is lucky to have two great men as his fathers.

JL: He is lucky and it took him long enough to figure it out!

M: Finally, he’s coming to terms.

JL: Never realized all of those characters had the whole two dads thing in common, that’s such an interesting parallel.

M: I loved hearing this! Warms my heart.

JH: Didn’t know having two dads could be genetic!

JL: I love Claire dishing out wisdom and talking sense to William.

M: I like the relationship he formed with Claire and Brianna.

JH: Yes! I hope he eventually realizes that this is all actually a blessing.

JL: It took long enough for him to become slightly bearable for me. This is the episode where I did not mind watching his scenes.

M: Yes, Willie. Now stop complaining about Jamie Fraser being your dad.

JH: Yes, and being a son does generally seem easier than being a father, especially in Outlander!

JL: This is not relevant to this scene, but we have been off the Ridge and away from the family this whole episode so far. Where is this final episode going to lead to?

M: Amaranthus is probs looking at Jamie and happy that Willie has his genes cuz she clearly still wants him.

JH: It’s good that they’re having this conversation at least. She definitely cares about him.

JL: I could tell she was lying from the first moment we met her. LOL.

M: I wouldn’t trust a word out of her mouth for the rest of my life.

JH: Oof, the situation is a bit different though! She didn’t have to initiate a romantic relationship with William, but LJG had been entrusted by Jamie to raise him.

JL: Finally, a good decision William has made.

M: Good. William doesn’t need any more mess.

JH: This is sad, but I do understand William’s reasoning.

JL: Finally, goodbye LJG and William, fun story but it’s time we get back to the Ridge. LOL

M: Yes! Agree, lets close this story out and head back.

JH: Another goodbye! Sometimes I wish all these characters could live together in the big house, but that’s just not possible, unfortunately.

M: I never realized how traumatizing that must have been for Willie as a boy, glad he got some closure.

JH: He turned back this time!!!

JL: Yes, that was a nice parallel to the previous moment he rode off on horseback and left William.

JH: Aww, I’m sure these three will see each other soon. LJG can’t seem to stay away from Jamie for too long. LOL.

I think that that’s probably it. I think we’ve seen the last of them. I don’t swear to it, because Lord John might pop up somewhere else, but I’m pretty sure that William is done.

~ Diana Gabaldon

JL: Yea, he really can’t!

M: Agreed.

We returned to the Ridge

after Jamie reconciled with Lord John and William.

But even after we brought in the harvest,
I couldn’t stop myself from counting
the days we had remaining.

What history had written
about Jamie’s fate
at King’s Mountain haunted me.

JL: I love when they return home to the Ridge. I feel they are slightly safer for now at least.

JH: I’m hoping they can have a little peace after all this, but that’s rarely the case for our characters!

M: I just want to know how is this even going to end?

But at little Davy’s first defiant cry,

I was reminded that Jamie and I had been
rebelling against time itself
from the very beginning.

JL: I forgot Bree was pregnant. I feel like we haven’t seen Roger and Bree in such a long time.

M: To be honest, there’s been more Willie than Brianna in this season.

JH: Aww, another baby on the Ridge!

JL: I wonder why Bree never read the book once she found out Frank wrote it.

M: I think she mentioned earlier that it was too hard for her? Maybe that’s why.

JH: Jamie has been holding on to this for a long time, and now they’re finally having the conversation.

M: I agree! He should just stay put but as we said earlier, we can’t change history.

JH: Yes, doing nothing is actually an option, Jamie! Although sitting still doesn’t seem possible for this man!

JL: Right! Like you can take a break from being King of Men, Jamie!

M: This man can’t stay away from any battle. Isn’t he tired?

JH: Yeah, unfortunately not fighting doesn’t seem to be an option for Jamie.

JL: The man doesn’t know how to back down from a fight ever.

JL: Percy deserves to be cursed out for his betrayal.

M: I bet LJG dressed up because putting Percy in his place is official business.

JH: You tell him LJG!

JH: You better sign that document Perry! You owe him this at least!

JL: Wow, what an ultimatum, didn’t know if LJG had it in him.

You betrayed us, Percy.
You betrayed me.
For that, you must answer.

M: That’s a crazy ultimatum.

Please, John.
You know I had no other choice.
He threatened to kill me.

JL: John getting revenge on everyone this episode.

Yet, here you are, alive and well.
Richardson, however, is not.

M: LJG is not letting himself be disrespected any longer.

You sign this affidavit confessing to the scheme
to malign my character, extortion, and kidnapping.
You will let the law decide your fate.

JH: LJG is on a killing spree this episode. LOL.

M: He needs to answer for his crimes!!

It will be your signature
on that paper or your blood.
Either way, you will pay
for your treachery.

JH: You don’t need to worry about what will happen Perry! Since you’re gonna sign it!

JL: Yea, Percy your best bet is to comply with his request.

JL: Good on LJG for walking away from Percy; he doesn’t deserve his forgiveness.

M: Good! He definitely should not even waste breath on a response.

JH: Well, he was right about not being brave.

JL: Wow, Percy still shot himself after he already signed.

M: Percy is a coward, that’s what that tells me.

JH: Damn, another man dead from this debacle!

JL: Is Claire writing about a surgery she has done or some mysterious case involving her patients?

M: Did she start journaling? To be honest, Claire hasn’t had much of a story this season either, so maybe she picked up a hobby we don’t know about.

JH: Good to see Claire getting some time sitting down!

JL: Wait what????

“People disappear all the time.
Young girls run away from home.

M: This was what she said in the very first episode…hold up.

Children stray from their parents
and are never seen again.

JH: That’s the opening of the first Outlander book! So, it’s all coming full circle!

Most are found, eventually.
Disappearances, after all, have explanations.

Usually.”

JL: I do not know how I feel about this. Has Claire been writing her/their story the whole time she has been talking to the audience in the voice-overs???

M: That makes sense! Wait, I love this.

JH: And what a story these two have!

It’s definitive. I thought they should not leave any loopholes because it is the end of the season and they’re not getting another one, so there’s no point in leaving open possibilities…. well, not leaving many possibilities open. There’s always some that are going to exist. [Roberts] and I agreed that it should just end very conclusively. And what he did … works effectively.

~ Diana Gabaldon

[Cleveland]
Fraser!

M: These two can’t catch a break.

JH: Aw man, what now? Can’t these two have one moment of peace?

JL: They are usually only allowed about five minutes of peace maximum.

Fans should brace themselves. The question of whether Jamie dies at [the battle of] King’s Mountain is the question this entire season has been building toward. We don’t avoid it. We walk straight into it. The battle itself is everything you’d expect from Outlander at its best: visceral, emotional, and not quite what anyone is predicting. We don’t do anything the easy way, and we’re not starting now.

~ Matthew B. Roberts

JH: Ugh it’s all happening now! I wish they had more time!

JL: I did too. I’m not ready for what happens next.

M: Welp. Let’s head into the finale ya’ll!

Fans will step into it already carrying something — a kind of grief. What I hope is that they set that aside for just an hour and let Claire and Jamie carry them somewhere unexpected. These two characters have outrun fate for 100 episodes. The finale might just answer the question whether this has all been fated or is their story being guided by a hand greater than their own.

~ Matthew B. Roberts

JL: Jamie being a man of his word is always trouble.

M: He did promise. UGH.

JH: It’s true, and Jamie has to keep his word.

[Claire]
Cleveland’s words echoed
like a death knell across the Ridge.
The battle I’d so dreaded
now cast its shadow before us.

And though I had conquered time itself,
I stood powerless as it marched
my beloved

JH: If it’s one thing Claire has learned, it’s that she is powerless against fate.

JL: Yes, she is. She also knows they have tried to change history so many times and have failed.

M: There’s no way that what Frank wrote is true! IT’S THE FINALE!

towards a fate I could not change.

We gave this episode 3.5 shots because it was a mix of appreciation and frustration, closure and unevenness, strong moments and slower ones. It was good, meaningful, and necessary, just not quite great.

We walked away from this episode feeling solidly in the middle: not bad by any means, but not one of the season’s strongest entries either. It took a rewatch for some of us to warm up to it, and even then, the experience was mixed. A big part of that came down to how much space the episode devoted to Lord John Grey and William. For some, that focus felt like too much and pulled attention away from the characters and emotional threads we’re more invested in. For another, though, that same focus was the highlight. It finally closed the door on the long-running LJG/William storyline, and there was something satisfying about seeing all of that tied up before the finale.

At the same time, we all agreed the episode did an effective job of wrapping up loose ends and positioning the story for the final battle. Structurally, it worked. It cleaned up dangling arcs, resolved tensions, and cleared the runway for the finale to take off. But even with those strengths, the emotional impact wasn’t consistent across the board. Some moments landed beautifully; others felt stretched or overlong.

Favorite Scene(s)

The scene that stayed with us the most was the moment Claire realizes that Richardson is a time traveler. The reveal unfolds slowly, with him dropping comments that do not belong in the eighteenth century, and Claire gradually recognizing that he knows far too much about events he should not understand. Watching her put the pieces together made the entire exchange feel tense and absorbing. His strange behavior finally made sense, and the stakes of his mission became clearer and more unsettling. It was one of the few times the show allowed a mystery to unfold at its own pace, and that made the moment land with real impact.

Even with that high‑stakes reveal, the scenes that touched us most emotionally were the quieter ones between Jamie and Claire. After an episode filled with danger, betrayal, and impossible choices, the moment Jamie finds Claire writing in her journal felt like a breath of calm. There is something grounding about seeing them together in a rare moment of stillness. Jamie settling beside her, putting on his readers, and sharing that small domestic space reminded us of the intimacy that has always been at the heart of their story.

That feeling deepened when Jamie read her journal entry aloud. Hearing words that echo the very beginning of the entire series created a sense of coming full circle. It felt like the show was gently acknowledging its own history and preparing to close the loop. The callback to the first episode carried a quiet emotional weight, especially for those of us who have returned to that beginning many times.

Directing

We felt the directing in this episode was strong and handled a lot of moving parts with real control. The pacing worked surprisingly well considering how much story had to be packed in. Nothing felt rushed, but nothing dragged either. Scenes were given enough space to land emotionally, especially the heavier dramatic moments, while the episode still moved quickly enough to keep the tension up and the momentum steady.

It was clear that the director understood how much needed to be accomplished in this hour and shaped the episode, so it never felt cluttered or chaotic. The balance between lingering on key moments and keeping the overall rhythm tight made the directing one of the episode’s real strengths.

Standout Acting / Performance(s)

The performance that rose above everything else in this episode was David Berry as Lord John Grey. We kept returning to how commanding he was in every scene. This episode finally gave him room to show a fiercer and more dangerous side of LJG, and he delivered with an intensity we rarely get to see from him. He moved through fear, heartbreak, fury, and resolve with a range that made him the clear standout.

From the moment he wakes up bloodied and chained, Berry plays John with a quiet steel that never wavers, even when he is being blackmailed with the most vulnerable parts of his life. His scenes with Percy reveal a man who has been betrayed but refuses to break. His scenes with Richardson show a man who cannot be manipulated. And the moment he shoots Richardson the second Claire lets him go is the clearest example of the badass side we rarely get to see from him. He stood on business, and the performance made that completely believable.

Even the emotional scenes, including the reunion with William, the long overdue reconciliation with Jamie, and the cold final confrontation with Percy, were layered and grounded. He carried the weight of years of history in his voice and body language, and it made every moment feel charged.

This was his episode, and he owned it. The fury, the heartbreak, the loyalty, the exhaustion, the resolve, all of it came through. If there was an MVP for this hour, it was unquestionably David Berry.

Favorite Costume(s)

We actually had a couple of standout costume moments in this episode, and they reflected two very different corners of the story. There was Bree in that bluish/green tartan dress during her scene with Jamie. Her wardrobe always leans slightly modern and a little less traditionally feminine than the period expects, and this look fits that pattern perfectly. It felt practical, confident, and very Bree, which made the moment between her and Jamie feel even more authentic.

Amaranthus costume absolutely delivered. Her costume, in the scene with William near the end, was striking and elegant, and she carried it with the kind of poise that makes her hard to look away from. No matter what chaos is unfolding around her, she always looks composed and intentional, and this dress was another example of how her costuming reinforces her presence.

Cinematography

We felt the cinematography in this episode delivered several striking moments that elevated the storytelling.

The use of the spyglass perspective to shift between Claire’s and William’s points of view was especially effective. The alternating shots through the lens created a playful but purposeful rhythm, letting us see what each of them noticed—and what they didn’t. That visual setup made the reveal that Richardson was simply on the other side of the lake fishing land with just the right mix of humor and surprise.

Building on that sense of visual tension, the boathouse sequences stood out immediately. That space is small, dark, and confined, yet the camera work made it feel tense and dynamic rather than cramped. The angles, the movement, and the way the shots captured both the danger and the emotional weight of the rescue made those scenes some of the most visually effective of the hour. The moment when William and Jamie quietly emerged from the water was especially striking; the stillness of the lake contrasted with their controlled, almost ghostlike rise, creating a sense of stealth and purpose that heightened the tension without a single spoken word.

That same command of distance and perspective carried into another standout moment: the confrontation between Claire and Richardson by the lake. The wide shot of Claire holding the gun created a sense of isolation and inevitability, while the angled close‑up that followed added intensity and drama. The shift between distance and closeness mirrored the emotional stakes of the scene.

We also appreciated the atmospheric shots sprinkled throughout the episode, like the Frasers riding through the rain and the familiar sweeping views of the Ridge. Those visuals always ground the show in its landscape and give the story a sense of scale and place.

And of course, the lighthouse image in the title card was a beautiful touch. It was simple, clean, and memorable, and it tied directly into the episode’s central mystery. It is the kind of image that feels like it could be printed on a postcard.

LOOKING FORWARD

What we are looking forward to in S8 Epi10 – And the World Was All Around Us – Series Finale

Jessica L: This season has not been what I was expecting at all. It started off great, then things sort of went off the rails. I don’t know how to feel about the finale. I am afraid for Jamie’s fate, but also it’s the very last episode of Outlander ever. I am intrigued about how it’s all going to end, as a book reader, it’s the first time I truly don’t know how it will end. Follow Jess L. on: X – @LOutlander .

Jessica H: Honestly, I can’t say that I’m looking forward to the last episode and Outlander being over! But I’m also dying to know what will happen and how our beloved characters’ stories will end! But you can really feel that the show runners love and respect the story, so I know we will get an ending that does Outlander justice.  Follow Jess H  on X – @calypsomoon9.

Margot: I can’t believe Outlander is ending! It’s been such a great show to watch, and I loved becoming a part of this community. I really want to know how this is all going to end. The episode has to be like two hours long to tie everything up! What’s this battle going to be like? What about Claire coming into her full power? Did Frank really tell the truth? Didn’t they shoot multiple versions of the ending, so what is happening?!! Follow Margot on X – @margieleev.
