Outlander – Inside S2 Epi3

Outlander S2 Epi3 was another episode of exquisite costumes and set designs. And as usual, Starz, Terry and Jon decided to share some insights and we love it!

MASTER RAYMOND’S COAT

Master Raymond’s waistcoat is embroidered with many different symbols that tell a story about his work. The Tree of Knowledge illustrates the principals of alchemy and the bird, placing his yellow claw into the eye, represents Yellow Fever. One of the symptoms of Yellow Fever was that the white of the eye would turn bright yellow. The herbs which are supposed to cure it are woven into the disease. ~ Terry Dresbach, Costume Designer

MAISON ELISE

My main goal with the brothel was to make sure it didn’t look like most brothels in TV/Film, which to me meant no red flocked wallpaper and no red walls. I wanted to make it elegant and sophisticated enough that people like Bonnie Prince Charlie would feel at home and that Murtagh would want to run away screaming.

The wall screens evolved, first I wanted the parlor/salon space of the brothel to be surrounded by a hallway with many doors to the rooms for the girls. I thought it would be interesting if the walls were pierced with openings with some kind of screens so the camera in the parlor space could see the women taking their clients to their rooms. Through research I found a wall with moldings in a pattern I liked and was inspired to try something similar as a cut out screen. I think it works.

I wanted caryatids columns (or as we call them “The Ladies”) in the brothel. We were talking to our sculptor about creating them and then we lucked out and Gina Cromwell, the Set Decorator, found several and we had the plaster men cast more. ~ Jon Gary Steele, Production Designer

THE RANDALL FAMILY TREE

The Randall Family Tree, as seen in Claire’s flashback. Recreated by the Art Department from The Outlandish Companion, and then simplified to show a clear lineage between Black Jack Randall, Mary Hawkins and Frank.
