Blacklanderz®Convos!
Outlander S7 Epi13 – Hello, Goodbye
Written by Madeline Brestal & Evan McGahey | Directed by Jan Matthys
This conversation is between Blacklanderz® Marsha and Lorinda. Arranged, edited and interrupted by Vida.

L: The scenery is beautiful! The mountains are quite majestic! Roger is ready to move on, but Buck is in awe of although things change, the mountains remain the same.

M: The first thing I noticed in the opening scene was the cinematography. Outlander knows how to capture the majestic beauty as well as the mystery of these mountains. The scenery is pure and breathtaking. I understand how Buck feels as if he looks around in awe.

L: Isn’t it amazing that Buck’s mention of the mountain alerts Roger that there’s a portal near and maybe Jemmy and Jerry are together?

M: I agree, Lorinda. Roger is beginning to piece together the logistics of a probable portal based on the location of the pre-existing dam. What will they find?

L: Dang Bree isn’t playing! She wants her son even if she has to beat it out of him.

Rob Cameron picked the wrong child and wrong woman to mess with. That slap and kick were vicious.

M: Mama Bear activated. LOL! Bree can be quite fiery! Rob doesn’t understand how dangerous she is willing to become to protect her children. Why are they showing us how she locks that door as she exits? Uh-oh.

L: That airplane will always represent Jemmy, every time I see it, I think of him. I guess Mandy does too. I wish she could feel him.

Rob is a criminal cutting the phone line so she couldn’t call for help. I think I would have tied him up and brought him with me. I can’t stand him; he reminds me of a sociopath. Poor Bree, she’s worried sick about her baby.

M: I know just what you mean, Lorinda. Rob is such a snake; I would have tied him up better as well. And Mandy, with her gifted instinct connecting her to Jem, I hope she feels him soon. Things are about to get more complicated…. I can just feel it with this scene!

Mandy, can you feel Jem now?
No.

L: I know exactly where he is, but why did he take him there? Is Rob a time traveler too?
M: Rob knows those work tunnels. He doesn’t realize how observant Jem is, so Rob may regret hiding him there. Rob read many of Bree’s letters, which helped him strategize how to find the hidden gold. Somehow, he must have known that time travel was involved to some extent. Rob is low-down and underhanded. I can’t stand him!
[V: Remember, Rob also had access to Roger’s Practical Guide for First Time Travelers back in the first half of S7.]

L: Isn’t that the plane Roger’s dad flew, in the Royal Air Force? I like the title card, and how it’s filmed in black and white. This week’s title, Hello, Goodbye, is a great segue about this episodes story line.

M: I believe so too. My prediction is for a quick introduction and sudden good-bye; but between who? And where?

L: Uh-oh why is he calling Rollo old?

Jamie is funny, all that hard work for nothing. I’m glad Jamie is there for him.

Ian’s heart had to be broken when he believed he had lost his dad and his uncle. It’s good Jamie can be there for him. I just wish they had brought Jenny over with Jamie.

M: Oh no, is Rollo approaching that age in dog years where we may lose him? He sure is a beautiful dog! It’s always great to see Ian and Jamie’s scenes. Jamie is such a father figure to Ian. He has seen Ian through many stages of his growth over the years. Ian always counts on him to provide words of wisdom at the right time.

M: Ha-ha! This entire exchange regarding the special dynamics of their wedding night is hilarious. Ian is confident but curious about how to handle the intimacy with Rachel.

Jamie’s reminiscing of his wedding night and Claire’s aggressive treatment with him brought a humorous spark to his eyes. Yes, I remember their Wedding Night episode very well! Hmmm…maybe a wee re-watch is in store. LOL.

L: Denzell has to be there. I don’t think Rachel will wed unless he’s there. Why is Ian worried about the wedding night, he’s lain with many women.

Jamie and Ian look like they could be kin sitting there, looking like two bookends. I don’t think Claire told Jamie to go slow. How could Jamie go slow? It was his first time! It is good advice, but desire is a feisty thing!
M: I liked this interaction amongst the ladies. They were so supportive of Rachel. Their discussion was more about Rachel’s role is to be emotionally strong to handle the ups and downs of life as a wife to military life. It was good they reminded her to cherish every moment together because situations can change suddenly during war.

L: Mercy likes having them around. I can understand why she wants them to stay, but when a war is going on you can’t stand still. Jamie’s a general now and has a company to lead. The way they’re talking about it makes it seem easy. I would be tore up from the floor up if my husband was heading out to battle. Talking about fasting and praying, the way they fought back them. Uh-uh, I don’t think I could have done it.

Then there’s also the small problem of cultural perception: the show (as an entity) tends to rely on preconceptions and assumptions, rather than what’s actually on the page (let alone why it’s on the page).

Ergo, Rachel is a Quaker. Quakers are shy, modest, prim and proper. We can’t show her wearing anything pretty, even for her wedding, let alone behaving passionately in bed!

M: Claire is so right! Marriage is a partnership.

L: What she said was true. Marriage is living through things together as partners, even when you’re apart.

You always know there’s someone that will have your back even when things get hard.

L: Denny skidding into the room, trying to make sure he hadn’t missed the wedding. He really does love his sister. Thank God Henry has Claire as his doctor. My mom was a nurse. She made sure I was up and moving quickly after my surgery. It’s true the faster you get to walking; the faster the body can heal. Claire is a force to be reckoned with, when she gives orders, people listen.

M: Jamie, trying to make the room perfect for Ian and Rachel is touching. It reminds me of the importance Jamie placed on the details of his own wedding. He is such a romantic. I like Denny. You can tell he loves his sister. Henry is rapidly recovering as we can clearly see. Jamie (in the background of Denny and Henry’s conversation) cuts a humorously sly look at Henry as he discusses how helpful Mercy has been to his recovery.

Henry goes on to mention the daily walks “just in the garden” they have. LOL. Jamie looks as if to say, “Henry, you ain’t slick, I know y’all are smitten with each other.”

Run that scene back and you’ll see what I mean. Sam plays humorous Jamie spectacularly!

L: Denny wanted to make sure LJG made it back safely. Now that he hears he hasn’t returned, I’m sure his concern was peaked.

The look on Jamie’s face when he says his eye socket was broken, he still doesn’t look remorseful about it.

M: Ha-ha… I howled at that moment! Jamie does not regret injuring LJG at all.

You can see Jamie’s concern, but he’s still in, Sorry, I’m not sorry mode.

L: Well, at least that gave Jamie pause. If he isn’t home from his escape, I hope he’s safe. Even though things aren’t well with them, I know he’s concerned about John.

Well thank God the spirit has spoken. Why don’t they call it the Holy Spirit? It’s too many spirits out there for them just to call the spirit. Let me get off my soapbox.

M: Jamie looked genuinely concerned for LJG when he learned he was to be hanged. I could tell he still cares about him even though he is still angry with him about Claire. He seemed relieved to hear he escaped even though he hadn’t returned home.

Thank you, Henry, for the interruption for the wedding to commence. Jamie is ready for the subject change, that’s for sure!

L: Ian looks rather nervous. It’s nothing like any wedding I’ve ever witnessed. This wedding is different. No priest, just people sitting waiting for the spirit to guide them.

M: Me too, Lorinda. This is a new experience for me as well. Everyone is waiting for signs to begin or something of that nature.

L: Twenty minutes of heads bowed and silence, oh boy. I hope someone is moved to speak soon.

I’m like Rollo, I’d be sleep by now. Claire looks like she wants to laugh. How long are they going to sit there?

M: Oh, my goodness! This sitting around as everyone staring in silence is like watching paint dry. Pleeeze, someone start talking!

L: OMG! Rollo has the right idea. Jamie is stemming and Claire is like, I have other things to do. How long will this last?

M: Claire and Jamie looked around as if to say, what do we do? What is supposed to be happening now? I was getting a little anxious for something … anything to signal that a ceremony has begun.

L: If I were there, I would be moved by my spirit to say something.

This is too much, Claire or Jamie just speak up. I guess Jamie was tired of whispering.

M: Good Lord…. sometime today, please!

L: Tag Jamie, you’re it. Now let the spirit use you. Good thing Jamie has quick wit and good introspect.

M: Ha-ha, exactly! You’re it, Jamie. Denny clarified for those in the room that any instinct to speak is how the ceremony progresses.

All present are encouraged to participate in the wedding. Jamie always has the kindest words to say in sentimental moments.

L: That was a nice fatherly thing to say about Ian. He’s a lot like his uncle Jamie. He will make an outstanding husband; he has two great role models. I also think him being around his auntie Claire and his mother has taught him how to properly treat his wife.

M: Jamie does say the most warm, meaningful things at the right moment. He has really strong emotional intelligence.

L: The loyalty Denny and Rachel have as brother and sister is beautiful. Rachel chose to follow him and she’s strong enough to deal with the violence.

It was funny to hear Ian interject that he’s the violent man. He may know how to kill but he has a loving heart. That’s right Claire, tell them both to butt out.

M: I love their relationship. Denny is extremely protective of his sister. He felt so much guilt exposing her to danger because she willingly followed him into the war.

L: Thank God he knows that she has found her heart. Isn’t it sweet how people who are in love always connect while they are at a wedding?

Look at Jamie, Claire and Mercy with Henry. Oh their relationship is one for the books during this era. It was basically unlawful.

M: What a touching moment for Ian and Rachel. I am sure that hearing the words expressed by their loved ones helped bolster their love for each other.

Denny’s loving words to Rachel touched Jamie and Claire as well as Henry and Mercy, as they lovingly glanced at each other.

L: I am so glad Ian has come out of that dark place. Rachel is his home now and his light. I like this wedding. The spirit is leading them to speak vows from their heart, not from a manual. It is sealed now.

M: Ian is such a fine young man. He knows who he is now, and he appreciates how Rachel enriches his life. He vows to love and protect her always.

Rachel returns similar vows that are so touching that Jamie and Claire swell up with pride at the two of them.

They look as if to say, “Ian and Rachel get it. These two beautiful people are going to be just fine.”

On your feet, soldier,
as Granny would say.

L: Granny was right! There’s no time for a pity party Jemmy. That helmet sparked something in him. He’s in the same place as his mom when stupid Rob locked her in there. Look at him executing the same steps his mother took to get out of that dark tunnel.

Help!

M: That’s right Lorinda! Jem is smart. I loved how he recalled his mom’s description of her movement in the caves when her team tricked her into finding her way through the tunnel. Jem didn’t waste any time being afraid; he just remained focused on his task to find his way out of those tunnels. His mom did it, so can he!

[Brianna]
Well, it was pitch black,
and I couldn’t see anything.

But then
I found a breaker box,
and I flipped on
all the switches.

L: The connection Mandy and Jemmy have is amazing! They are basically each other’s protectors, but the distance thing is a bummer. I’m glad they listened to their children. Hopefully, they can get to Jem soon. They’ve got double the power coming from both sides of their family

Jemmy!
I feel him, Mummy!
M: I wondered how they would include Mandy’s abilities to find Jem. I was on the edge of my seat as they played the hot or cold game. I understand her urgency to find Jem, but Bree needed to slow down given there weren’t any street lights on that dark road.

Mandy. Let’s play hot or cold.
And so, I think in season 7B, there is obviously a turning point in the storyline where Brianna can sort of regain some – it’s not necessarily control – but some power in a situation to be able to do something. I think there’s nothing worse than feeling trapped in your own body or trapped in your own life. And I think she’s very good at having a goal and achieving it. And protecting her children is something she really thrives at. So, if she is presented with the ability to do that then she’s going to feel a lot better.

L: Like father and son, they are moving with the same determination. I love how they directed this to show the three of them walking the same path in two different eras of time.

M: Yes, this scene was well done! I shouted when Jem heard his dad’s voice and shouted out in the hopes that Roger would hear him.

L: That’s a very craggy or should I say rocky and uneven path Roger and Buck are taking. But they are true Highlanders; they don’t miss a step.

M: Roger is determined. You had better keep up, Buck. LOL.

[V: Lorinda, I also liked the shots of Roger and Jem being in the same place in different time periods.]

Colder.
L: Look at Mandy, determined to find her brother. Jem is a brave young soul, and I like how they made it plain in the last episode that he was a tough one to break. You see a lot of Jamie, Claire, Bree and Roger in his determination and the will to escape and get back home.

M: Mandy and Jem are true soldiers. They understand the mission. Mandy was focused on tracking her connection to Jem. Jem was focused on finding his way out of those tunnels and back to his family. Lorinda, I agree, they show a lot of their parents and grandparents strength and tenacity!

Warm, warmer.

L: Thank God Jem is a good listener and retains what he has been told. I was holding my breath. I didn’t want them to be going in circles. You’d think Bree would know he was in the tunnels.

[Brianna] But then the tunnel
split in two directions.
Luckily, I had studied the tunnel schematics,
so I knew where to go.
I went right.

M: Oh, my goodness! I was on the edge of my seat wondering if Bree would find Jem! This plot has gone on long enough now. Not one more episode of this searching for Jem because I am emotionally exhausted by all this turmoil.

L: That buzzing had to make them nauseous. I’m sitting here thinking how long can they stand that buzzing sound. And for goodness sake, please don’t touch those stones. Two perfect indicators that Roger’s dad had been there – the goggles and the survival kit from the future.

M: Oh, the survival kit; that was unexpected! Now we are back on the where’s Roger’s dad, is he hear within reach somehow. Good grief, Outlander! Keep me anxiety ridden, why don’t ‘cha!

L: I guess since they tore down the stones the portal looks different. Just one step and Jemmy could end up where his da is.

If he goes to his dad’s voice, it could be both a good and bad thing. Talk about a conundrum.

M: So, this must be the moment when Jem walks through a portal! It has to be! Where is he?! When is he?! I am so on edge right now! When is he? LOL! I am so on edge right now!

Jeremiah!

[Roger] Jeremiah MacKenzie!

Da?
L: Oh, my lord did Jem go through those stones? I’m not sure if I want Jemmy to go back in time with Roger. Roger is off to the races.

He’s gone.
M: That’s what I thought too, Lorinda! Oh no, Mandy, don’t say Jem is gone! What on earth?! Switching back to Roger as he is trying to catch that boy running in the distance. He must know something, right?!

L: Now she knows where Rob took Jemmy and he knew where the portal is. But how could he know where one was? If he’s not a traveler, then how did he identify it?

M: Bree suddenly realizes where Rob hid Jemmy. I hope she finds him, but I don’t know. Mandy said his trail is cold.

Oh, Rob, you bloody bastard.
L: I thought for sure Bree was going to hit Jem. So he didn’t go with his da. So, who was the boy?

Hot, Mummy, really hot.
Hot, Mummy! Stop! Stop!

M: YES! Thank you, finally, Jem is found (darn near run over by his mom in the process).
L: So, who is this boy? Roger got some speed. That professor, who wasn’t an outdoors man, has most definitely turned in one now.

M: Roger and Buck wasted no time catching up with that boy!

L: Whoo! I know Bree is relieved! Can you imagine someone kidnapping your child and the fear of never seeing them again! I’m glad Bree told him what happened to her and didn’t keep it a secret. It helped him escape.

M: Hi Jemmy! We’ve been looking for you for ages. Finally!

L: Teamwork makes the dream work. Now how can we get him to talk? Nice going Buck. I’m still worried about you running around like that and picking up that boy. Take it easy dude.

M: Please forgive me, but that accent is THICK, and I mean no harm. But I couldn’t understand much of what the boy said. I had to replay the scene about five times. I know he mentioned a helmet, and then some woods and that’s it.

L: I guess that threat got him to tell him all the deets on Roger’s dad. I guess Jerry was hungry and since the folk wouldn’t help him, he help himself. I know I would have done the same thing. Those were some scary folk.

M: Okay, I take your word for it, Lorinda. Sounds good to me girl.

L: OK, I’m just gonna say it . . . I don’t want to see Ian and Rachel getting it on. It was tender and all of that and the bed was not defiled. Just like his uncle and bum-bums. Rachel ain’t scared at all.
M: I am so impressed by how tastefully they treated Ian and Rachel’s wedding night scene. I thought it was passionate, emotional, and humorous. They have very good chemistry. Hats off to the casting director.

We really wanted to discuss what was important for Ian and Rachel, and their character progression, but also for me and John, about what we thought was right. We came up with this idea with Vanessa about, a present being unwrapped. It’s not the grand reveal that’s the exciting part: It’s peeling back all of those layers.
Rachel is religious, she’s a Quaker. So in some ways, she would have been a little bit scared. But also: Rachel isn’t the type to be scared. So, it was kind of trying to define the parameters of their relationship [in a way that was] fun, loving and playful, rather than it necessarily being this kind of super, like, lust-driven scene.

L: Rachel is just like Phil Collins, I’ve been waiting on this moment for all my life, oh yeah. Ian is thinking it’s like that then.
M: Ha-ha. You got that right, Lorinda!
Yeah, no, it was mine. [Laughs] I complained about wearing my bonnet so often, and John always teases me for wearing bonnets. So, when it was, like, written into the script that she takes the hair down, we were like, “We need that to be a moment.” And Vanessa was like, “I totally agree.”
The way we shook the hair out, we were joking, it’s like that moment in Friends where Ross’s cousin has the slow-motion, hair spin. [Laughs] We were using that as the inspo. So I’m glad that landed.

I think it’s quite an exciting surprise for Ian. There’s always been this fiery quality to Rachel, which I think is what’s attracted him from the very beginning to her energy… We started off that scene imagining it being a present being unwrapped, and there was an excitement of what were they going to see when they were totally vulnerable with each other.

L: Ian, you better watch out; she’s going to make you moan some more. Who told her what to do? Has she read some books or something? Somebody gave her some pointers or was it the spirit?
M: Ian forgot that Claire probably gave Rachel some insight into the night’s “work.” He should have known she was gonna eagerly go for it after Claire was finished filling her in on things!

Rachel’s a very devout Quaker, and this will be her first time with a man in that way, normally we see that storyline being a woman is very nervous and shy and worried it’s going to hurt. And I think she does have all those fears, but I think she loves Ian and she trusts him and they’ve had quite a prolonged engagement at this point. And I think that she has quietly been raring to go.
L: Well, it’s done. They have officially consummated their marriage. It wasn’t too bad – nice, gentle and complete.
M: Again, very tastefully done! They had a good night if you know what I mean. LOL. Ian and Rachel are a great match in every way. And the music was oh so beautiful during this entire scene.

L: Every time someone else is in bed, we get a scene of Jamie and Claire in bed. But this time, it’s different. Jamie looks troubled.
M: I get it Jamie. He always said he was a jealous man. And are those the same sheets, though? I mean, if so, that’s a lot to swallow.

L: Hell yeah! It is awkward being in a bed where those two were together. That’s pure mind torture! Then he’s worried if LJG is dead. Talk about conflicting emotions. I think he holds it against LJG because of what he said to Jamie. I just want them all to make up.

M: Awkward is an understatement. I give Jamie credit though; he is trying to push through this one.

L: It wasn’t Jamie who failed William; he just overheard a conversation. You know the saying, “What’s done in the dark comes to the light.” Morning light came but it was at a most inconvenient time. Well, nobody knows he’s actually the son of Red Jamie, except the five of them. William needs to continue in that role and try to work out the deception privately. He’s not too honorably at the moment.
[V: Lorinda, it’s seven, if you include Rachel and Bree.]

M: Their conversations are so good, because they listen to understand. Claire comforts Jamie with her words when he has doubts about how he is perceived by William. He wants to be a good father figure, but he understands that their relationship is very strained, maybe forever. That is heartbreaking to him.

L: I love these two together; they know how to pull each other out of a pit of darkness. She knows Jamie is a good man. It’s not his fault he was blackmailed by a snobbish teenager, who didn’t understand how far reaching her choices would go. That room is a non-factor now.

M: Claire’s words of affirmation about the similarities between Jamie and William were well timed. That pep talk perked Jamie right up. Now, he can shift his focus to Claire. Yes, the room be damned. As always, I love their intimate moments.

L: Poor LJG, he can’t catch a break! Thank God he’s a quick thinker.

Do they actually believe him? Or, are they going to say gotcha!

M: LJG needs to start thinking about escaping.

This situation feels like it is worsening by the minute. How will he get out of there?! Or will he?

[V: At least this time, he didn’t shout out his name as Lord John Grey. He’s learning his environment.]

L: It amazes me how Jemmy takes the blame for what Rob did. He is brave and smart and Rob had everyone fooled.

M: Isn’t that just like a child, though? Many times, they think it’s their fault when something negative happens involving a situation with mom or dad.

L: Nah, my kids would have been with me when I talked to the police. At this point, I wouldn’t want them out of my sight. That’s right Jemmy asks questions, the last person took you away.

M: ‘Chile, same. I am not letting them out of my sight!

L: Where in the H-E double toothpick did he go?

This means he’s not working alone! Who’s in cahoots with him?

M: See, now, this is where I (as Bree) locate my gun and keep it close. Bree is an excellent shot!

L: Now, why would she call and tell you all he kidnapped Jemmy, if they had something going on?

Typical, thinking she’s fooling around with this sociopath! The unmitigated gall!

M: So, now Bree is uncomfortably explaining her “relationship” with Rob as though she did something wrong.

These cops need to go. They are not very astute at all. She is not going to be able to rely on them for help. Get out!

L: Now she looks suspect because she can’t tell the entire story because they will have her in a straight jacket. Shoot, what’s she going to do?

M: I’ll tell you what she should do. Escort the police out. And go along with the kids to Fiona’s house. She should also secure her gun because she may need it.

L: They believe they’re so smart and have it figured out. Why would she call the police if she was having an affair with him? She’s married and the police would eventually come talk to Roger.
M: I am so over these police. They are dumb as rocks. Just go.

L: If they called her, like she asked them too, it would corroborate her story. Girl, you should have said he was on an excavation trip and couldn’t be reached by phone. She dropped the ball on that one. WTH? No need to be hysterical, if he doesn’t move around! Where can she stay?

M: Bree needs to end her discussion with those useless cops. Bree needs to make a Plan B, because Plan A isn’t working.

L: The both of them are alike in some way. Neither one of them actually remembers their father or their mother. At least Roger sees his dad as a RAF hero, but Buck, well Roger can fill him in on all the details. He basically just met his father and mother in the last week’s episode.

M: Yes, their lives are very similar in that way. All this discovery taking place has got to be mind-blowing for Buck! At every turn, there is something new being revealed that meaningfully ties Roger and him together.

L: Yes, she did, I read about it in the book, A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows. Ha! Buck is clueless to everything Roger just told him. Too bad he wasn’t able to get a tour of the city.
[Note: ‘A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows‘ reveals what really happened to Roger MacKenzie Wakefield’s parents. Orphaned during World War II, Roger believed that his mother died during the London Blitz, and that his father, an RAF pilot, was killed in combat. But in ‘An Echo in the Bone’, Roger discovers that this may not be the whole story.]

M: Like I mentioned, more meaningful connections continue to unfold about their family history. This journey they are on will be ever-changing in their lives. How fascinating this journey must be to experience.

L: Jerry said, “Not another group of loonies; I’m out of here.” I bet he was like, “How do you know my name?”

M: Jerry is fed up with everybody by now. It’s written all over his face when he starts to run. Roger knows it’s his dad as soon as he notices his jacket. Will he get him to stop running so they can meet? I am so anxious to be at this part of the storyline…finally!

M: Yes, Roger, call out JW’s name and show him his dog tags! That will make him stop. Roger has to be guarded with how he answers questions. I don’t think Roger is sure he should reveal his true identity to JW (his dad), as he may not be able to process that newfound knowledge. All three of them were so nervous in this scene. I bet Roger was a whirlwind of emotions deep inside! Can you imagine?!

L: Thank God he stopped. I understand him being on the defense; the locals would have had a trial and burned him at the stakes. That different time helped out a lot; I’d have thought I was losing my mind too.

L: Thank God Roger is a history professor and can tell the deets, so he can gain his confidence. Wow, he’s looking at his son and has no idea who he is. I know Roger wants to grab him and hug him. What an awesome opportunity to meet his father! The look in his eyes as he talks to him.
M: Clever, Roger. Reveal information only someone from the future would know to verify you are from the future.

L: Jerry needs to get his bearings. I wonder how he ended up in 1739. What was he thinking we he passed through the portal? Did they find any pieces of the plane, or did it burn up on entry? That drink sure came in handy.
M: Poor JW. He is hurt and so confused about where and why he is! Roger has an opportunity to have a relaxed conversation with his father. He’s building a memory for a lifetime at this moment. I am certain Roger is going to cherish this moment. What a story this will become to share with Bree, Jemmy, and Mandy!

L: The control Roger has to not reveal who he is to his dad. Listen to him giving subtle hints, same name. I would have just blurted it all out. Jerry is so clueless; he doesn’t know that Roger is reassuring him.
M: In a way, this is a blessing for Roger to be able to meet and have a conversation with his father. Even though they are all running from danger lurking behind them, they were able to create a wee tender moment for themselves. And Buck is equally lucky to be able to experience his family members from the future. He’s got good people in his family line that should make him very proud.

L: Oh, so the plane didn’t come through only Jerry! Those dern stone circles will get you every time! He didn’t mention the stones buzzing did he, just that he fell asleep.
M: Ahh, I see! Well, this clears up how JW disappeared after all these years.

L: He was so busy trying to get home and running from the natives that he didn’t recognize the portal. Kind of like Claire, poof and she was in 1740 something.

M: That’s what I was thinking too, Lorinda. JW just didn’t understand what was happening to him. Try processing that…In your own time, in one moment. And then in the next moment, everyone you come in contact with wears strange clothes, speaks with a different accent, and is highly superstitious about everything (including him). JW doesn’t stand a chance in this era. He will not survive, if he stays. It will be the noose for him…I am sure of it!

M: JW is a hero. I mean, he was one in the making. When his plane crashed, he was doing God’s work.

L: So, Jerry was working with the MI6. Wasn’t Frank a member too? Claire said he sent people on secret missions. Wouldn’t it be amazing if Frank and Jerry were working together? Just another thing to make Roger even prouder that he was his son. Wait, that would mean Bree’s stepfather and Roger’s father knew one another!
[V: Yes, Frank recruited him to fly that mission.]

L: And were off to the races again; these people don’t give up and that little boy is a snitch. They all better get to running! Get up Jerry and keep running. They couldn’t answer the questions because of those villagers! Buck is holding his chest, uh-oh!
M: Really, JW? Falling… at this time (that stupid scenario is typically made for the woman in a movie scene). Now we have to slow down (eye roll) and jeopardize being caught to save her (I mean, JW). Mannnn, you had better hobble on that leg so we can get away! Help me, help you, sheesh!

L: There’s a reason why Roger was there. It was to save his dad! He took him straight to the stones. He’s gonna blow his cover saying his mother’s name.

If he wouldn’t have told him, he would have been thinking about Roger and ended up right back in the dangerous situation. Good thinking Roger. Jerry isn’t falling for it though.

M: Yessss, Lorinda! I believe that was the true reason he was there.

L: Did you see the struggle in Rogers eyes, we win was a great distraction. Hurry up and get him outta there.

Those dogs are getting closer, and since when did they use dogs to hunt people down? I wonder if Jerry heard Roger. The look in Rogers eyes, the pain of loss.

M: Yay, I did see Roger struggling! Yes, they did it! Buck and Roger got his dad to safety. Roger gives his dad the essential tips to steer home properly through the stones. Focus… focus JW! Roger knows what he is talking about here.

[Softly] I love you.
I love that Roger was able to give his dad key information about the war while reassuring his dad he was important to winning the war. That I love you Roger whispers to his dad broke me!

Well, again (as always…)—Book v. Show. Roger does indeed send his father back through the stones, Jerry does indeed land during WWII, and there’s a very neat little twist in which Jerry (and his wife, Dolly) jointly save wee Roger (aged 2 or 3) during a bombing raid on London, but the parents perish in the Underground station (a lot of Londoners took shelter in these during bombing raids), when the roof caves in, which is why he ends up living with his grandfather.

L: That bunker scene. If you haven’t read A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, go read it. It’s so much more to this. If Jerry hadn’t gone back, there would be no Roger today!

M: I totally agree, Lorinda. That meeting between them in the past was pivotal.

It was different in the book, but I do like how they transitioned to that scene of Roger and his dad in the future.

Maybe, in the sense that when you’re in love but you’re not married, there’s less certainty there. Like, when Ian left for Scotland, Rachel obviously loved him still then, and she was very much hopeful that he would return. But if he didn’t, she would have had to eventually move on with her own life.

Whereas I think when you become married, especially in that time, you’re thinking about maybe having children, and where you’re going to live, and where are you going to move after the war. You’re envisaging this whole future. And so, if Ian was to not come back, that whole future would be ripped away from her.

L: Young love is in bloom; the honeymoon phase is the best! Look at them willing to do whatever it takes to be together and to help each other out. Ian got his groove back with a wonderful young woman. Reminds you of Jamie and Claire
M: These two are really beautiful together. Whatever violence Ian possesses, Rachel is his safe harbor. She is all in with this marriage.

From Ian’s perspective, he’s a very loyal character. When he makes that commitment to somebody, that is him saying, ‘til death do us part, basically. And this isn’t his first time, you know? There’s a whole life that he’s lived with this other woman, and that wasn’t his choice to leave. He was told to leave.
So, I think this time ‘round, he makes this pledge with all seriousness, knowing the consequences of what it could turn out to be, but still wanting to make sure that, concretely, he was saying to her, ‘You’re stuck with me until you tell me to go.’

L: Look at Jamie, he’s a general now! Looking all strong and handsome! She will go anywhere with this man. And she’s right, he’s on the right side with the right colors on.

Jamie is always pulled into lead roles in every war, whichever side he chooses. That’s why they call him the King of Men.

M: No one enters a scene like Jamie. He exudes confidence and charisma. And that uniform is the best one yet. He looks regal in it. It is clear that they have reconciled now.

They are back to their normal selves with each other… and I am here for it.

Claire reassures him that she is so happy he’s alive that she can endure whatever comes, as long as they are together.

Their love is timeless. Jamie always looks at Claire like he’s starving…. for something. LOL.

L: I forgot about Fiona, and she can confide in her. Ernie has no clue about what’s happened. If I were Fiona, I would have told my man. It would have been our little secret!

[V: I am glad she has Fiona and Ernie. Lorinda, I would have told him too. They have no idea where Rob is or what he is capable of doing.]

L: Bree ain’t no dummy! She took what Rob wanted out of the house. And the way Bree shoots, I’m more afraid for her adversaries. She’s a brave one!

M: Yes, smart of Bree to give the box of letters to Fiona! But I don’t agree with her isolating herself from everyone while Rob is free. Even with her possessing a gun.

L: Wait, so Bree is going to find Roger? If she doesn’t find him and something happens to her, what about the children? I wish I could remember this part of the book, but it’s all fuzzy in my brain.

M: Well, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I won’t go into that part. Besides, they may handle it differently in the show. Things get quite interesting; let’s just leave it at that!

L: That vision or memory was important to Roger; that’s why he remembered it. But Buck is right. They have no memory of the past and yet here they are.

M: Maybe it isn’t important to know what’s a real memory. It just is, what it is. The scenes, following JW’s departure through the stones, are filled with peace. Suddenly, Roger and Buck appear to travel with a sense of calm. Maybe that meeting subconsciously addressed a void that allows them to be more at ease with themselves.

That day in Craigh na Dun
when we came back, I was so focused on Jem,
how scared and alone he must have been without his da.

And just as I touched the stone,
I thought of my own father,
how scared and alone I felt without him.
L: That’s how he ended up there. I wonder if he would have thought only of Jem would he have been in the tunnel with Jem, not with his dad. So hopefully, he’ll go back before Bree goes there. Roger was sent there to save his dad’s life, not Jem.

I think the stones brought us here
so I could save his life.
M: And that right there is the moment that crystalized for me why Roger went back that far in time. It was all about his dad. I believe Roger is at peace about his dad’s absence from his life. Those few moments helped him find the meaningful closure he needed; reinforced by his dad’s presence for those few moments. You are equally right, Roger. Jemmy is not there. Go back home confident in that fact…and hurry!

Rounded up, we give this episode 4-shots.
As always, the cinematography and landscape shots were beautiful; purely majestic. However, we thought two scenes were too long – Ian and Rachel’s storyline/scenes and the length of time with Jem and Roger’s searches. We also would have liked to see more focus on LJG.
Favorite scene(s)
We have three favorite scenes in this episode. One is with Roger and Jerry. It gave Roger the opportunity to know his father, speak with him and gave him a memory he could hold onto forever.
The other ones are with Ian and Rachel – the wedding ceremony and wedding night. Once the dialogue began during the ceremony, we loved the words shared. The emotions displayed between Ian and Rachel, shared by Claire and Jamie, were very beautiful. We also loved the tenderness, as well as the playfulness, Ian and Rachel showed each other during the wedding night scene. It was filmed so tastefully, and the music was perfect.
Directing
The directing in Outlander is always brilliantly done. We loved how Ian and Rachel’s wedding night was shot and done so tastefully. We also loved the directing of Roger and Jerry’s scenes.
Standout Acting / Performance(s)
There were four standout performances in this episode. John Bell and Izzy Meikle-Small on Ian and Rachel’s wedding night. They have very good chemistry, and you could tell that they took such care and prepared for that scene.
Another was Richard Rankin in his portrayal of Roger’s struggle with emotions surrounding his dad. We also enjoyed Matthew Adair’s portrayal of Jem. He showed every emotion he had as he went through that tunnel.
Favorite Costume(s)
There were two favorite costumes. Of course, that of Jamie’s Continental uniform. That man can wear anything and look good in it! We also liked Jerry’s costume – the turtleneck, leather jacket, boots, and long pants!
Cinematography
The landscape that Roger and Buck had to traverse, and the aerial shot of the stones were outstanding.
